Staff Physicist - Theoretical AMO

The salary range for this position is $133,046 - $174,192.
We are looking for a Theoretical AMO Physicist.
As a member of the R&D department, you'll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world's best quantum computers to solve the world's most complex problems.
This position is located in Seattle, Washington or Remote.
The ideal candidate will work with a team of theoretical and experimental physicists to develop, optimize and implement novel quantum gates.
You will be part of the team that lays down the fundamental new technologies for future generations of our quantum computers! Responsibilities: Investigate and propose strategies to optimize coherent control schemes in atomic transitions.
Numerically model proposed strategies, including the impact of physical noise processes.
Estimate control requirements for implementation Collaborate with the R&D and Engineering departments to ensure that controls are implementable Work with the R&D team to prioritize and design de-risking experiments for the proposed strategies.
Write scientific papers, invention disclosures, and present proposed strategies internally and externally.
You'd be a good fit with: PhD in applied or theoretical physics, electrical engineering, control and optimization, or related discipline.
3+ years of work experience in corporate setting or large team environments Experience modeling efficient population inversions and pumping-dumping control between atomic transitions.
You'd be a great fit with: Working experience with trapped ion and/or cold atom systems Quantum control theory: worked on simulating or developing control schemes for 1Q and 2Q entangling gates Familiarity with quantum computing concepts Our HQ is located in College Park, Maryland and we are a 15 minute metro ride from Washington DC.
We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in the Seattle, Washington area.
Depending on the position, you may be required to be located in Washington DC, Seattle, Washington or the Toronto, Canada area.
