Responsible for maintaining, constructing and retrofitting electric substation equipment including circuit breakers, transformers, switches, battery systems, tap changers, cooling systems, lighting arresters, and other substation equipment, including the placement of concrete drilled shaft foundations and pads, installing support steel structures, station insulators, ground grids and bus.

Install, maintain, assist and repair breakers and transformers.
Perform switch and clearance orders as instructed by dispatch.
Follow dispatch instructions on releasing clearance.
Perform general substation maintenance and repairs.
Conduct infrared testing and interpretation of readings on all equipment such as switches, bus connection, cable connection, etc.
Document and perform monthly inspections for transformers and counter readings.
Perform new construction and modification of existing substations.
Pull and terminate control wiring in control house and switchgear.
Install rack and terminate cables for communication equipment.
Provide support for operations; Substation Standby Duties and callout assistance after regular working hours.
Occasional travel to remote system facilities.
Continuation occupational training.
Minimum Education & Work Experience
Six months to one year of advanced study or training past the high school level
2 years related substation experience
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills Education/ Experience:
Six months to one year of advanced study or training in Substation maintenance and safety
2-3 years experience, through apprenticeship or vocational training, in substation installation, maintenance, construction and safety
Substation safety and maintenance certification
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Basic knowledge of general Substation construction and maintenance procedures
Basic knowledge of Substation safety regulations
Skill in Microsoft Office including Excel and Word
Ability to complete the Garland Power & Light Apprentice Substation Technician Program as it is outlined
Licenses & Certifications
Valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License
Valid Texas Class “A” CDL or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Physical Tasks & Working ConditionsThe incumbent works in energized substations, switch yards and generating plants; frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards; majority of work performed outside with exposure to risk.
