GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The HVAC Systems Specialist is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of heating systems, boilers, ventilation systems, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment, Building Management Controls, and related fixtures.
This includes Chillers, VRF Systems, pumps, motors, exhaust systems, fume hoods, and lab controls.
This position includes on call/stand-by responsibilities and is considered an essential personnel role for repair of equipment off hours and to respond for weather related emergencies and snow removal, even if the College is closed.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Instructs and may functionally supervise personnel of a lower grade, i.
e.
, HVAC Technicians, etc.
, in all phases of maintenance and operation of building HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning/ refrigeration) and their allied sub-systems and components for the purpose of assuring optimum HVAC systems performance.
Inspects, repairs, tests, trouble-shoots all types of building HVAC systems, related sub systems and their related controllers and control devices.
Operates and maintains building HVAC systems, sub systems, with their related devices.
Repairs and calibrates HVAC systems components and allied devices for assurance of proper operation and optimum system performance.
Recommends appropriate methodology for operation, installation and modification of HVAC systems associated with existing facilities, new buildings/or new construction or alterations of systems within buildings.
Provides input as to effectiveness of the standard preventive maintenance program being performed on the HVAC systems and their allied sub systems and devices.
This input will be provided as a result of appropriate performance testing of subject systems.
Makes recommendations for new instructional, research, and maintenance techniques.
Establish practices, procedures, files and training for controlling, minimizing/ or preventing accidents.
Maintains required records and statistical data.
Estimates quantities of materials, supplies, and equipment required and initiates procurement through established procedures.
Reclaims refrigerant form equipment in need of repair or disposal, while developing and maintaining an inventory of refrigerants both in equipment and stored for future use.
Operates motor vehicle to travel to campus work sites and satellite campuses.
Assists in planning and scheduling work and keeps necessary records.
Additional related duties, as assigned.
Job Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1.
State of MA Refrigeration Technician License which includes a universal CFC certification, plus two years of full-time or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the following substitution: - Certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, as evidence of completion of a two-year program in refrigeration and heating, may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Possession of Class "D" driver's license.
3.
Earned Metasys Facility Operators Certificate (or equivalent) within 24 months from date of hire.
4.
Thorough knowledge of fundamental principles of HVAC systems with a high degree of technical competency in the following fields: heating and ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning, hydronic systems, pneumatic electronic, electrical-control systems, air/water balancing, water treatment, electro-mechanical and steam and hot water systems and their related sub-systems with allied components.

The ability to instruct, train, functionally supervise subordinate personnel in all phases of building HVAC systems service maintenance and operations.
6.
Complete knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards associated with this specialty and all the safety precautions that must be complied with.
7.
Considerable ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, specifications, technical literature, and written instructions.
8.
Ability to accurately maintain equipment inventory and history records, present comprehensive reports, and present facts clearly both orally and in writing.
9.
Ability to understand and carry out complex oral instructions.

ADDITIONAL PREFFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Certification of successful schooling in two or more building HVAC control systems (i.
e.
, pneumatics, electric, electro-mechanical, hydronics, refrigeration and air conditioning, heating and ventilation).
Certification of successful completion of HVAC building systems, comfort control, for large and small facilities, and control systems application for energy conservation.
Knowledge of techniques and procedures required to install, maintain, operate and repair energy management communications systems.

Additional Information: COMPENSATION: Full-time, benefited AFSCME Unit Position (HVAC Refrigeration Mechanic II) Job Grade 17 - Step 10 with starting annual salary of $74,586 plus additional compensation for Stand-By responsibilities, up to $11,700 annually.
Position includes participation in a comprehensive employee benefits program including membership in the Massachusetts State Employees' Retirement System.
Candidates may qualify for placement above entry-level salary if currently employed in the State system.
