What to Expect: As the Commercial, E&S, and Specialty (CLESS) Property Claims Director leading Programs, Alternative Ventures and Innovation, and Litigation, you will be accountable for large, complex losses and litigation for Commercial and Personal Lines Contract and Wholesale E&S, P&C Programs, Alternative Ventures, and Litigation for the entire CLESS property claim organization.
In this role, you will be responsible for leading leaders and providing technical claim expertise to domestic and foreign distribution partners as well as Commercial and E&S/Specialty Underwriting, Product and Pricing.
Additionally, you will direct the activities of claims teams including strategic initiatives to assure claim cost and operating expenses are controlled, superior claim servicing and quality is provided, and specialized talent is acquired, developed, and retained.
Ideal Candidates will have: Experience handling claims (or leading a team) within Programs, Alternative Ventures and Innovation and Litigation preferred.
Experience leading a virtual team is highly preferred.
Experience leading leaders is preferred.
(Internal Use Only) Compensation Band: H4 Job Description Summary The Excess Surplus (E&S) Claims team handles some of the most unique and interesting insurance claims at Nationwide.

You'll drive the communication and performance for all claims to achieve desired operational results, including customer service, indemnity and expense outcome and strategic alignment with division goals and objectives.
To succeed, you'll work with claims leaders to develop training plans and strategies for the division and develop, coach, train and mentor individual team members.
You'll advise and support the corresponding Underwriting operation.
Job Description Key Responsibilities: Directs the operation of the department to include planning, annual budget preparation and monitoring, projecting human resource and customer needs, hiring, motivating, promoting, developing and performance management of staff.
Provides claims handling expertise to new product development and account creation and leads, in partnership with Underwriting, new product development and management.
Builds and maintains relationships with agents, brokers and underwriters.
Develops and implements plans to solve business problems related to the customer's business and the service/products provided by management liability.
Provides technical consultation/direction to all claim professionals.
Functions as a content specialist to help develop training curricula.
Evaluates claims, in a timely manner, to identify and manage reserves according to company standards and best reserving practices.
Reviews and analyzes files to ensure adherence to division guidelines and best claims handling practices.
Reviews claim quality results to identify coverage trends and to ensure consistency in policy interpretation.
Recommends training or other appropriate action.
Manages the claims processes consistently within a technical specialty.
Coordinates efforts with other specialty claims functions such as Claims Legal, Recovery, CQR, SIU and claims staff support.
Provides direction and mentorship on all aspects of litigation management.
Connects with reinsurance auditors to research and answer questions on specific claims.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Associate Vice President or Vice President.
Three or more direct reports.
Typical Skills and Experiences: Education: Undergraduate degree preferred.
Completion of general insurance courses, such as IIA, AEI and/or CPCU preferred.
Leadership/management classes and/or insurance technical classes preferred.
Experience: Ten years claims experience, including five years in claims management preferred.
Requires multi-line experience with exposure to the general agency system.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Multi-line, multi-jurisdictional, and E&S experience is helpful.
Knowledge of the general agency system, state insurance department regulation, unfair claim handling regulations and a good understanding of tort law.
Ability to effectively connect with individuals and groups.
Effective listening, verbal and written communication skills necessary for customer contact, negotiation, presentations, project management, personnel management, technical and non-technical contacts preferred.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the Vice President and HR Vice President.

The national salary range for Director, Claims - E&S/Specialty : $121,000.
