Purpose of the Position:
The Paralegal is responsible for supporting a broad range of practice areas and leading all administrative support functions for the Office of General Counsel within UMA Education, Inc.
and its affiliates, divisions, and subsidiaries.
The role requires a well-developed understanding of in-house legal operations and the practice areas relevant to a nonprofit institution of higher education, including but not limited to legal research, drafting and reviewing legal documents, corporate governance, immigration, identifying opportunities for streamlining workflows, enhancing efficiency, and implementing best practices, as well as a keen attention to detail, organization, and excellent writing skills.
The Paralegal collaborates on a daily basis with individuals at all levels across the organization – from individual contributors to Board members – and must be able to synthesize and apply information gathered from a variety of sources to sustain and improve legal operations and serve as the main point of contact for the Office of General Counsel.

Anticipated starting salary of $70,000; pay rate negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Background checks for students and team members.
Title IV’s incentive compensation regulations.
Student complaints.
Corporate matters.
Tax matters.
Other practice areas relevant to institutions of higher education.
Support the attorneys to prepare, review, and revise legal documents, including contracts, agreements, policies, and corporate governance documents, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal guidelines.
Research various legal topics and summarize research for attorneys.
Coordinate with vendors or other support services for the Office of General Counsel.
Record maintenance and management, deadline management.
Research the need for state-level filings, including but not limited to secretary of state and charity bureau filings, and where appropriate, make and document such filings and keep them updated.
Identify opportunities to streamline legal processes, enhance efficiency, and implement best practices.
Case and matter support, coordinate responses to subpoenas, FERPA requests, and other external requests for information.
Assist in the preparation maintenance of insurance applications.
For all operations into which the role has input or participation, model and expect consistent execution in accordance with UMA’s mission and values, all UMA policies and procedures, all applicable federal and state regulations, and all accrediting agencies standards and requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Compliance Demonstrate knowledge of, and carefully follow all applicable federal and state compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the Department of Education, accrediting agencies, Florida’s Commission for Independent Education, and internal UMA policies and procedures.
Effectively communicate compliance requirements to other staff as appropriate and quickly escalate any compliance concerns to the Compliance department.
Work Experience, Skills & Abilities: Minimum Requirements Associate degree or a certificate in paralegal studies.
5 years of experience as a paralegal.
Strong oral and written interpersonal communication skills.
Able to professionally communicate in English and otherwise interact professionally with other Admissions team members and those in other UMA departments.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize assignments.
Excellent legal research and writing skills, such as analyzing case law, and drafting legal documents, such as contracts and memos.
Experience with working amidst competing priorities and escalating unresolved conflicts between priorities as needed.
Demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to maintaining client confidentiality.
Effective with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other business tools such as legal research databases, case management systems, document management software, and other legal technology tools.
Able to work and interact professionally in a diverse and inclusive work environment.
Preferred Certified Paralegal or the Paralegal CORE Competency Exam.
Experience in an in-house legal department.
Working Environment: Remote home office with occasional travel to UMAE facilities.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Physical Demands: Requires long periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer.
Requires occasional bending, stooping, and squatting.
Requires occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.
