The general salary range for this position is $93,000-$112,000.
Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Staff Attorney, Farm Animal Law for the Animal Protection Law (APL) department.
In this position you will lead ongoing and develop new legal interventions for an assigned practice group of the APL department to achieve organizational strategic plan metrics and defend strategic plan victories.
Provides legal and strategic analysis and advises staff, departments, and external stakeholders on campaigns, legislation, specialized areas of law, and the most effective tactics to achieve strategic plan metrics.
You will be responsible for:
• Leading ongoing and developing new litigation and other legal intervention projects for an assigned practice group of the Animal Protection Law department in federal courts, state courts, and administrative agencies to achieve and defend strategic plan metrics;
• Leading ongoing and developing new requests for investigation, demands for documents, and petitions for enforcement necessary to achieve strategic plan metrics;
• Leading the drafting and filing of rulemaking petitions to initiate the regulatory process or amend regulations necessary to achieve strategic plan metrics;
• Providing advice to staff and other departments on legal and policy strategy and campaign tactics, conducting additional research as needed.
Engaging in cross-departmental planning projects to coordinate related efforts;
• Assisting with the operations of the department including development and maintenance of policies, records, and procedures;
• Supervising and mentoring law student clerks and fellows in assigned practice group.
Assigning and managing legal research projects for law student clerks;
• Representing the department and organization at various forums, including in court and in relations with government agencies, counsel, and the public.
Advising external stakeholders as needed;
• Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school;
• A minimum of four (4) years of legal experience required.
Five (5) years of experience preferred;
• Admission to the bar in at least one applicable jurisdiction or the ability to obtain admission;
• Ability to develop and successfully lead litigation campaigns;
• Knowledge of the specialized area of the assigned practice group (Farm Animals, Companion Animals, or Wildlife as appropriate);
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);
• Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
• Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments;
• Ability to exercise sound judgment;
• Strong written and verbal communication skills;
• Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
• Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
• Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
